Rengarten, Vladimir

    0.01 sec.
Rengarten, Vladimir Pavlovich

Born July 12 (24), 1882, in Tashkent; died July 10, 1964, in Leningrad. Soviet geologist and paleontologist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1946).

Rengarten graduated from the Institute of Mines in St. Petersburg in 1908. He worked for the Geological Committee (now the All-Union Geological Research Institute) from 1908 and at the Institute of Geological Sciences of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR from 1941. He was director of the F. N. Chernyshev Geological Museum from 1947 to 1949.

Rengarten’s principal works dealt with regional geology, primarily with the tectonics, stratigraphy, and paleontology of the Caucasus. He completed a tectonic regionalization of the Caucasus, comparing it to the Pamirs. His stratigraphie charts of the Cretaceous deposits of the Caucasus laid the foundation for current ideas on the stratigraphy of the Cretaceous period in the southern USSR, including the Crimea, the Caucasus, and the Kopetdag. In his paleontological research, Rengarten devoted special attention to the systematics, phylogenesis, and paleo-biogeography of Cretaceous and, in part, Paleogenic fauna.

Rengarten was awarded the State Prize of the USSR (1948), the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and various medals.
