Name Origin: For Kiliaen Van Rensselaer (1595-1644), one of the early patrons of the Dutch New Netherlands territories and a founder of the Dutch West India Company. Much of the territory of the county had been granted him by patent in 1630. Area (sq mi): 665.39 (land 653.96; water 11.43). Pop per sq mi: 237.40. Pop 2005: 155,251. State rank: 21. Pop change: 2000-20005 1.80%; 1990-2000 -1.20%. Pop 2000: 152,538 (White 90.20%; Black or African American 4.70%; Hispanic or Latino 2.10%; Asian 1.70%; Other 2.40%). Foreign born: 3.70%.
