On central eastern border of NY, east of Albany; organized Feb 7, 1791 from Albany County. Name Origin: For Kiliaen Van Rensselaer (1595-1644), one of the early patrons of the Dutch New Netherlands territories and a founder of the Dutch West India Company. Much of the territory of the county had been granted him by patent in 1630.
