On the central northern border of ND, northwest of Minot; organized Jan 4, 1873 (prior to statehood) from Pembina County. Dissolved in 1891 for lack of settlement; present county created Jul 23, 1910. Name Origin: For Gabriel Renville, an early settler and trader.

In south-central MN, southwest of Minneapolis; established Feb 20, 1855 (prior to statehood) from unorganized lands. Name Origin: For Joseph Renville (1779?-1846), captain in the British Army during the War of 1812, fur trader, and assistant to missionaries to the Sioux.
