Rerikh, Sviatoslav

    0.01 sec.
Rerikh, Sviatoslav Nikolaevich

Born Oct. 23 (Nov. 5), 1904, in St. Petersburg. Russian painter working in India. Son of N. K. Rerikh.

Rerikh studied architecture at the London Royal Academy of Arts (from 1919) and later at Columbia and Harvard universities in the United States. Having visited India for the first time in 1923, he settled there permanently in 1936. Rerikh has continued the traditions of his father’s late work, painting portraits, allegorical and genre scenes, and—most frequently—landscapes. His works include The Himalayas: Sunset (1937, Tret’iakov Gallery), Portrait of N. K. Rerikh (1937, Tret’iakov Gallery), Eternal Life (1954, artist’s collection), The Cliffs (1969, artist’s collection), My House (1971, artist’s collection), and My Country Is Beautiful (1974, artist’s collection).

Rerikh visited the USSR in 1960 and 1974–75. His second visit was in connection with an exhibition of his father’s works, arranged to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the senior Rerikh’s birth.
