The substance left after distilling off all but the heaviest components from crude oil in petroleum refinery operations. Also known as bottoms; residuum.

In regards to concerns over storing ethanol in a 'reserve:' It is true ethanol transported through a petroleum pipeline picks up residues and water left in the lines, but ethanol transported in pipelines at ethanol plants remains pure.
That total includes 428 million tons of crop residues; 377 million tons of perennial crops; 87 million tons of grains, if yields increase 50%; and 106 million tons of animal manures, process residues and various feedstocks.
A team led by Maria Rosa Guasch-Jane of the University of Barcelona analyzed the chemical makeup of dried liquid residues on the inside surfaces of six jars from the boy-king's tomb.
