Resin, Synthetic
synthetic polymers of relatively low molecular weight (oligomers), which, as a result of chemical hardening, are capable of forming insoluble and infusible products. The terms “synthetic resin” and “synthetic polymer” were previously synonymous. Synthetic resins include alkyd resins, carbamide resins, phenol-formaldehyde resins, polyester resins, and epoxy resins. Synthetic resins are used widely in the production of plastics, paints and varnishes, adhesives, and hermetic compounds, in the treatment of fabrics and paper, and in the modification of other polymers.
