retable (rē`tābəl), frame for decorative panels at the back of an altar in European churches. Retables, often sumptuously decorated in alabaster and gold, generally contained scenes from the Bible. In contrast to the intimate quality of the emas, retablos, and power figures, which can be commissioned by individuals, these objects of devotion belonged to temples and churches and were communally owned and publicly viewed. Her work, which incorporates Mexican folk motifs and particularly the small votive pictures known as retablos, exudes powerful feeling and is unlike that of any of her contemporary Mexican muralists (2). Usually small, intimate paintings that contrasted with the grand mural tradition of her time, her work was often done on sheet metal rather than canvas, in the style of Mexican street artists who painted retablos, or small votive paintings that offer thanks to the Virgin Mary or a saint for a miraculous deliverance from misfortune. |
