He was believed to sail across the sky in his solar bark and at night to travel in another bark through the underworld, where he had to vanquish a serpent before he could be born again. As the creator, he rose from the ocean of chaos, creating himself and then engendering eight other gods. Re (also Ra), in ancient Egyptian mythology and religion the god of the sun, who traveled across the sky in a boat that appeared on the horizon in the morning and sank into the “kingdom of the dead” in the evening. The cult of Re evidently emerged early in the third millennium B.C. By the middle of the third millennium B.C., Re was venerated as the king and father of the gods.
