Revelle, Roger (Randall Dougan) (1909–91) oceanographer, sociologist; born in Seattle, Wash. He worked at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, where his tectonic studies of the Pacific Ocean led to major contributions to the theory of seafloor spreading. After his interests broadened, Revelle became a professor of population policy at Harvard (1964–76), then joined the University of California: San Diego to be professor of science and public policy (1976–91).
