reverse osmosis [ri′vərs äs′mō·səs] (chemical engineering) A technique used in desalination and waste-water treatment; pressure is applied to the surface of a saline (or waste) solution, forcing pure water to pass from the solution through a membrane (hollow fibers of cellulose acetate or nylon) that will not pass sodium or chloride ions.
