Balkan Communist Federation 

an organization that had its origin in the Balkan Social-Democratic Federation (founded in 1910, with a membership of the social-democratic parties of Bulgaria, Serbia, Rumania, and Greece). It participated in the creation of the Communist International in 1919. In 1920 it was resolved that the latter federation be renamed the Balkan Communist Federation and that it join the Comintern.

The Balkan Communist Federation struggled against the onslaught of reaction in the Balkans, fighting for the legality of communist parties, a united front of the proletariat, the peasantry, and all other national revolutionary forces, and the creation of a Balkan federation of workers’ and peasants’ republics. It published a special journal, Fédération balkan-ique, which was published in several languages from 1924 to 1932. Under the leadership of the Comintern, the Balkan Communist Federation (in which G. Dimitrov and V. Kola-rov worked) did much for the creation and consolidation of the communist parties of the Balkan countries. In the early 1930’s, the activity of the Balkan Communist Federation ceased as a consequence of the new tasks confronting the communist parties in the context of the fascist offensive and the threats of world war.
