Revutskii, Lev (Levko) Nikolaevich 

Born Feb. 8 (20), 1889, in the village of Irzhavets, now in Chernigov Oblast; died Mar. 30, 1977, in Kiev. Soviet composer and teacher. People’s Artist of the USSR (1944). Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (1957). Hero of Socialist Labor (1969). An outstanding contributor to Ukrainian musical culture.

Revutskii graduated in 1916 from the Kiev Conservatory, where he studied composition under R. M. Glière. From 1924 to 1933 he taught at the N. V. Lysenko Institute of Music and Drama, and beginning in 1934 at the Kiev Conservatory, where he became a professor in 1935. His students included V. B. Gomoliaka, N. V. Dremliuga, G. L. Zhukovskii, V. D. Kireiko, G. I. Maiboroda, P. I. Maiboroda, A. G. Svechnikov, and A. D. Filipenko. Revutskii’s compositions included symphonic and vocal works.

Revutskii was a deputy to the second through fifth convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR. He received the State Prize of the USSR in 1941 and the T. G. Shevchenko State Prize of the Ukrainian SSR in 1966. He was awarded four Orders of Lenin, four other orders, and several medals.
