Reynolds stress [′renĀ·əlz ‚stres]
(fluid mechanics)
The net transfer of momentum across a surface in a turbulent fluid because of fluctuations in fluid velocity. Also known as eddy stress.

Feddersen and Williams [14] measured the distribution of Reynolds stresses [15] and investigated dissipation near the surf zone.
RSMs, instead of calculating turbulence eddy viscosity, explicitly solve the transport equations of Reynolds stresses and fluxes.
In this formulation, Reynolds stresses are considered control variables while the averaged velocities are considered state variables.
