Rheinfelden (rīn`fĕldən), town, Aargau canton, N Switzerland, on the Rhine River, opposite the German town of the same name. Although it has one of the largest hydroelectric plants in Europe, Rheinfelden is chiefly noted as a tourist center with saline baths. It was the scene of almost continuous fighting in the Thirty Years War Thirty Years War, 1618–48, general European war fought mainly in Germany. General Character of the War
