Rhines, Peter B. (Broomell) (1942–  ) oceanographer; born in Hartford, Conn. He worked at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (1972–84) before joining the University of Washington (1984). He made major contributions to studies of ocean circulation and the movement of trace chemicals in the seas.
