Rhondda (rŏn`də, Welsh rôn`thə), city (1991 pop. 70,980), Rhondda Cynon Taff, S Wales, on tributaries of the Taff River. Coal mining, once the chief occupation, has disappeared. Light manufacturing and quarrying are the main industries. A mining heritage museum is at Treharris.
Rhondda an urban area in S Wales, in Rhondda Cynon Taff county borough on two branches of the Rhondda Valley: developed into a major coal-mining centre after 1807 and grew to a population of 167 900 in 1924: the last coal mine closed in 1990. Pop.: 59 947 (1991) Rhondda a city in Wales, Great Britain, located in Mid Glamorganshire in the Rhondda River valley. Population, 88,900 (1971). Rhondda is the center of the South Wales coal field.
