ribbon microphone [′rib·ən ′mī·krə‚fōn] (engineering acoustics) A microphone whose electric output results from the motion of a thin metal ribbon mounted between the poles of a permanent magnet and driven directly by sound waves; it is velocity-actuated if open to sound waves on both sides, and pressure-actuated if open to sound waves on only one side.
