Rice, Henry Mower (1816–94) pioneer, U.S. senator; born in Waitsfield, Vt. He moved to Michigan (1835) and then to Minnesota (1839). He traded with the Winnebago and Chippewa Indians and obtained large land cessions from the latter (1847–51). He was a territorial delegate to Congress (1853–57) and served as one of the new state's first two U.S. senators (Dem., Minn.; 1858–63). He was a U.S. commissioner in several Indian treaty negotiations (1887–88). Minnesota placed his statue in the U.S. Capitol. How to thank TFD for its existence?
