Richard, Maurice (Joseph Henri Maurice Richard) (zhōzĕf` äNrē` môrēs` rē`shär'), 1921–2000, Canadian hockey player, b. Montreal. Richard, nicknamed "the Rocket" by his admirers, played his entire career (1942–60) with the Montreal Canadiens, where he became a great hockey star and a French-Canadian icon. He established many National Hockey League records, including becoming the first to score 50 goals in a regular season, which was then 50 games, and eight points in one game. His career total was 544 goals in regular season play. Richard, (Joseph Henri) Maurice(born Aug. 4, 1921, Montreal, Que., Can.—died May 27, 2000, Montreal) Canadian ice-hockey player. He played right wing for the Montreal Canadiens (1942–60) and became the first National Hockey League player to score 50 goals in a regular (50-game) season (1943–44).
