Richards, A. N. (Alfred Newton) (1876–1966) pharmacologist; born in Stamford, N.Y. He taught at Columbia (1904–08) and Northwestern (1908–10) Universities before settling at the University of Pennsylvania (1910–46). In World War II he chaired the Committee on Medical Research, which made penicillin available for widespread use.
