Richards, William Trost, 1833–1905, American painter, b. Philadelphia, studied in Florence, Rome, and Paris, and settled in Germantown, Pa. Early in his career he painted landscapes and still lifes, but a year after buying a house in Newport, R.I. (1866), he turned to marine paintings. His light-struck seascapes, which follow in the tradition of luminism, luminism (l`mĭnĭz'əm), American art movement of the 19th cent.

Richards, William Trost (1833–1905) painter; born in Philadelphia. A draftsman, he studied abroad (1853–56), lived in Germantown, Pa., then settled in Newport, R.I. (1890). He is known for his precise seascapes, such as On the Coast of New Jersey (1883).
