Born in Tennessee, with degrees from Richmond College and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Carver quickly became a revered professor at his alma mater, serving as chair of the department of Comparative Religions and Missions at the seminary.
He attended Richmond College for three years before completing his professional training at the Medical College of Virginia in 1890.
