Riding, Laura (b. Reichenthal; m. Gottschalk and Jackson) (Madeleine Vara, pen name) (1901–91) poet, writer; born in New York City. She studied at Cornell (1918–21), as well as several other schools, and adopted "Riding" as her surname in 1926. She spent much of her life in Europe and in New York City, but later moved to Wabaso, Fla. A prolific writer of criticism, translations, and prose works, she is noted for her collaborations with the British writer, Robert Graves, and her metaphysical poetry, as in Selected Poems: In Five Sets (1970).
