Rigault, Raoul Georges Adolphe
Born Sept. 16, 1846, in Paris; died there May 24, 1871. A Blanquist and member of the Paris Commune. As a student in the 1860’s, Rigault led a secret youth organization. Between 1866 and 1870, he suffered numerous reprisals at the hands of the police. He took part in the insurrections of Oct. 31, 1870, and Jan. 22, 1871. In March 1871 he was elected to the Paris Commune; he was a member of the Public Safety Commission and subsequently became public prosecutor of the Commune. Rigault was one of the leaders of the defense of Paris against the Versaillais, who captured and shot him without trial. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
