Georgetown University

Georgetown University, in the Georgetown section of Washington, D.C.; Jesuit; coeducational; founded 1789 by John Carroll Carroll, John, 1735–1815, American Roman Catholic churchman, b. Maryland. He studied as a child with Jesuits at Bohemia, Md., and later at Saint-Omer in Flanders, since Catholic secondary education was not allowed in Maryland.

Its law and medical schools are noteworthy, and its archives are especially rich in letters and manuscripts by and about persons important in American and Roman Catholic history. The School of Foreign Service is the largest school of international relations in the world and the oldest in the United States. Research institutes include the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies and Woodstock Theological Center and Library.

Georgetown University

Private university in Washington, D.C., U.S. Founded in 1789, it was the first Roman Catholic (Jesuit) college in the U.S. It has always been open to people of all faiths. It includes a college of arts and sciences, a graduate school, and schools of foreign service, law, medicine, nursing, business, and languages and linguistics. Important facilities include a seismological observatory, the Woodstock Theological Center, and various medical research centres.
