Rihand
a river in central India, a right tributary of the Son (Ganges River basin). It is approximately 250 km long and drains an area of about 12,500 sq km. It flows over the Chota Nagpur and Baghelkhand plateaus. The maximum flow occurs between July and September. The mean flow rate is approximately 200 cu m per sec. A complex hydraulic engineering installation was built on the Rihand between 1953 and 1961 at the settlement of Pipri. It includes a dam 90 m high and more than 900 m long, a reservoir with an area of more than 460 sq km, and a hydroelectric power plant with a capacity of 240 megawatts.
