Kal’o, Rikhard Ianovich
Born July 2 (15), 1914, in St. Petersburg. Soviet graphic artist. Honored Art Worker of the Estonian SSR (1964). Kal’o studied at the Pallas School of Art in Tartu (1936–40) under A. Laigo and taught at the Tartu Art Institute (1944–48). He works mainly in the technical media of pen-and-ink drawing, wood engraving, and line engraving. Kal’o’s prints (The Liberation of the Prisoners, colored wood engraving, 1940; The Refugees, wood engraving, 1942; The Potato Harvest, line engraving, 1947; The Chess Players, line engraving, 1957; and Lunch Break, wood engraving, 1960), book illustrations (for example, for Shakespeare’s Collected Works, wood engraving, 1958–71), and numerous bookplates are marked by a lively narrative quality, vivid characterizations, and varied compositional solutions.
