Ringgold, Samuel (1800–46) soldier; born in Washington County, Md. The son of a congressman, he graduated from West Point in 1818. At the head of a corps of "flying artillery," he advanced his guns to within 100 yards of the Mexican lines at Palo Alto (May 8, 1846); mortally wounded there, he died a few days later.
