Rio Grande do Norte 

a state in northeastern Brazil. Area, 53,000 sq km. Population, 1.6 million (1970). The capital is Natal. The economy of Rio Grande do Norte is based on backward agriculture. Sugarcane is grown on the Atlantic coast, long-staple cotton is grown in the west, and sisal is grown in the south; the state accounts for approximately 30 percent of the nation’s total sisal harvest. Rio Grande do Norte is second in Brazil in the gathering of the wax of the carnauba palm. Tungsten and salt are mined and agricultural raw materials are processed.
