On the southeastern border of MO, southwest of Cape Girardeau; organized Jan 5, 1833 from Wayne County. Name Origin: For Gen. Eleazar Wheelock Ripley (1782-1839), officer in the War of 1812, MA legislator, and U.S. representative from LA (1835-39).
