Dordogne River

 ancient Duranius.

River, southwestern France. Rising in the Massif Central and flowing west for 293 mi (472 km), it unites with the Garonne River north of Bordeaux to form the Gironde Estuary. It then flows through the spa resorts of Monts Dore in the Puy-de-Dôme. The river is a source for hydroelectric power.

Patches of sandy loam nearby are less exciting, but the intensively cultivated alluvial soils that run towards the River Dordogne are not good news.
Apart from rolling hills, ancient fortress towns (and the famous foie gras), there is plenty for the kids to do here, most of it centred on the River Dordogne itself.
As the land rises from the coastal plains, the river Dordogne cuts its way through limestone uplands, giving the area the feel of a sunbaked cross between Derbyshire's Peak District and the Cotswolds.
