Hooghly a river in NE India, in West Bengal: the westernmost and commercially most important channel by which the River Ganges enters the Bay of Bengal. Length: 232 km (144 miles) Hooghly the western distributary of the Ganges delta in India. The Hooghly originates at the confluence of the Bharat and Jalangi. It measures approximately 250 km in length and flows into the Bay of Bengal in the Indian Ocean, forming an estuary ranging in width from 5 to 30 km. Its chief tributary is the Damo-dar River. The Hooghly is subject to ocean tides. It is navigable for its entire length, and ocean-going vessels can travel as far as Calcutta. The cities of Bhatpara and Calcutta lie on the Hooghly.
