Isar (ē`zär), river, 160 mi (257 km) long, rising in the Tyrol, W Austria, and flowing NE through S central Germany, past Munich, to the Danube River. There are more than 25 large hydroelectric plants below Munich.

The Isar rises in the Tyrolian Alps and flows into Bavaria. The lowest water level is in winter; in summer there are flash floods. The average rate of flow at the mouth is 185 cu m per sec. Logs are floated on the river. The city of Munich is situated on the Isar.
