Location: In southwestern Pennsylvania, encompassing 3,000 square miles in seven counties along the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio rivers. Special Features: From 1875 to 1980, southwestern Pennsylvania was the Steel Making Capital of the World. The industry made possible railroads, skyscrapers, and shipbuilding, while altering corporate practice and labor organization. The heritage area preserves, interprets, and manages the historic, cultural, and natural resources related to Big Steel and its related industries. There are remains of numerous mills as well as communities founded by mill workers, many of which are linked by hiking trails and riverboat tours. See other parks in Pennsylvania.
