Name Origin: From an Indian word spelled Roanoak by the first English settlers. Indians applied it to an island, meaning 'place where white shells are found' or perhaps 'shells which are used for money.' Or possibly named for the lost colony of Roanoke. Area (sq mi): 251.04 (land 250.87; water 0.18). Pop per sq mi: 351.50. Pop 2005: 88,172. State rank: 20. Pop change: 2000-20005 2.80%; 1990-2000 8.10%. Pop 2000: 85,778 (White 93.00%; Black or African American 3.40%; Hispanic or Latino 1.00%; Asian 1.60%; Other 1.40%). Foreign born: 3.10%. Median age: 40.90. Income 2000: per capita $24,637; median household $47,689; Pop below poverty level: 4.50%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $30,422-$32,951. Unemployment 2004: 3.10%. Change from 2000: 1.20%.
