Redford, Robert (Charles Robert Redford, Jr.), 1937–, American actor and director, b. Santa Monica, Calif. Blond, with a perennially boyish handsomeness and an appeal that has lasted several decades, he is one of Hollywood's superstars. He began his acting career in 1959, scoring his first big success in Neil Simon Simon, Neil (Marvin Neil Simon), 1927–, American playwright, b. New York City. His plays, nearly all of them popular, if not always critical successes, are comedies treating recognizable aspects of modern middle-class life.

He received an honorary Academy Award in 2001. In 1980 he founded the Sundance Institute to sponsor young filmmakers' works, and by the 1990s its film festival was the major showcase for U.S. independent films. His All-American good looks at first threatened to typecast him as another matinee idol, but he began to use his status as a superstar to become a director of serious films such as Ordinary People (1980), which won him an Oscar as director. He also became a generous investor in new and untried moviemakers through his Sundance Festival, and was an outspoken supporter of liberal causes and environmental campaigns.
