Roborovskii, Vsevolod Ivanovich
Born Apr. 26 (May 8), 1856, in St. Petersburg; died May 23 (June 5), 1910, at Taraki estate, in what is now Kalinin Oblast. Russian traveler. Roborovskii took part in N. M. Przheval’skii’s third (1879–80) and fourth (1883–85) expeditions to Central Asia. In 1889 and 1890 he was with the Tibetan expedition led by M. V. Pevtsov, during which he made independent trips to the Kun-lun Mountains, northern Tibet, and the Kashgar region. From 1893 to 1895 he led an expedition to explore the Tien-Shan and Nan Shan mountains, northern Tibet, and the Hami Desert. The expedition, in which P. K. Kozlov also participated, secured extensive zoological, botanical, and geological collections, mapped vast regions of Central Asia, and determined 30 astronomical points.
