Rocha Pombo, Francisco
Born 1853; died 1933. Brazilian historian, one of the founders of the liberal-positivist school in Brazilian historiography. Rocha Pombo considered the geographic environment to be the main determining factor in history. He supported a liberal bourgeois republic and devoted much of his attention to describing antimonarchical movements and the struggle of the Indians against the colonists. He acknowledged the inevitability of revolutions, which were, in his opinion, determined by the development of both the forces of nature and social contradictions. Rocha Pombo was sympathetic toward the October Revolution of 1917 and opposed imperialist intervention in Soviet Russia. WORKSHistoria do Brazil, vols. 1–13.
