Rochev, Iakov Mitrofanovich 

Born Jan. 10 (23), 1909, in the village of Ust’-Ukhta, now in Ukhta city soviet, Komi ASSR. Soviet Komi writer. Member of the CPSU since 1940.

Rochev graduated from the Komi Pedagogical Institute in 1937. He began publishing in 1929. His chief work is an epic trilogy consisting of the novels Two Friends (1951; Russian translation, 1960), The Izhma Is Restless (1959), and Renewal of the Land (1966). The trilogy deals with prerevolutionary and revolutionary events, the Civil War of 1918–20 in the North, and the lives of the Komi and Nentsi during the establishment of Soviet power. From 1953 to 1970, Rochev was editor in chief of the journal Voyvyv kodzuv (Northern Star).
