On central southern border of WI, southeast of Madison; organized Dec 7, 1836 (prior to statehood) from a territorial county. Name Origin: For the Rock River, which flows through it.

    In the southwestern corner of MN; established mistakenly as Pipestone County May 23, 1857 (prior to statehood) from Nobles County; name changed Feb 20, 1862. Name Origin: For the Rock River, which runs through the county; named for the outcrop of quartzite about 3 sq. mi. in area and rising 175 ft. above this prairie region; now called "the Mound."
