Androsace

(rock jasmine), a genus of annual and perennial herbs of the family Primulaceae. The leaves are generally rosulate and entire. The small flowers, which are white, pink, or red, are solitary or in umbels. The calyx is campanulate or spherical, and the corolla is saucer-shaped or funnelform. Heterostylism is characteristic of many species. The fruit is a spherical capsule.

There are more than 100 species of Androsace, distributed in temperate regions of the northern hemisphere, mainly in Eurasia. The USSR has about 35 species, growing mainly in the arctic and in the subalpine and alpine zones of mountains. A. septentrionalis grows in arid meadows and on dry slopes in forest and forest-steppe zones. A. filiformis is found mainly in the forest zone in moist shady places, often along forest paths. Some high-altitude and arctic species form dense covers. Several species, such as A. carnea, A. villosa, and A. sarmentosa, are raised as ornamentals.
