In south-central KY, southeast of Lexington; organized Jan 8, 1810 from Lincoln, Pulaski, Madison, and Knox counties. Name Origin: For the Rockcastle River, which flows along the southeastern border of the county; named for the castle-like rock formations along its banks.

Area (sq mi): 318.06 (land 317.53; water 0.54). Pop per sq mi: 52.60.
Pop 2005: 16,712. State rank: 68. Pop change: 2000-20005 0.80%; 1990-2000 12.00%. Pop 2000: 16,582 (White 98.30%; Black or African American 0.10%; Hispanic or Latino 0.60%; Asian 0.10%; Other 0.80%). Foreign born: 0.00%. Median age: 36.30.
