On southeastern border of NH, southeast of Concord; original county, organized Apr 29, 1769. Name Origin: For Charles Watson-Wentworth, Marquis of Rockingham (1730-82), British statesman, prime minister, and cousin of the NH Wentworths, largely responsible for repeal of the Stamp Act.

    On the northwestern border of VA, northwest of Charlottesville; organized Mar 1, 1778 from Augusta County. Name Origin: For Charles Watson Wentworth (1730-82), 2nd Marquess of Rockingham, prime minister of England who was largely responsible for the repeal of the Stamp Act.
