In southeastern NY, northwest of NYC; organized Feb 23, 1798 from Orange County. Name Origin: For the rugged land and the Palisades on the Hudson River, which form its eastern border.

Area (sq mi): 199.34 (land 174.22; water 25.12). Pop per sq mi: 1681.30.
Pop 2005: 292,916. State rank: 15. Pop change: 2000-20005 2.10%; 1990-2000 8.00%. Pop 2000: 286,753 (White 71.70%; Black or African American 11.00%; Hispanic or Latino 10.20%; Asian 5.50%; Other 6.60%). Foreign born: 19.10%. Median age: 36.20.
Income 2000: per capita $28,082; median household $67,971; Pop below poverty level: 9.50%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $41,138-$41,661.
Unemployment 2004: 4.40%. Change from 2000: 1.30%. Median travel time to work: 32.60 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 45.60%.
