Rockling

the common name of fishes from three genera of the family Gadidae. The fishes include the genus Gaidropsarus (14 species), the four beard rockling (Enchelyopus cimbrius), and the genus Ciliata (two species). Rocklings, which measure up to 50 cm, are found in the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific oceans. Two species are found in the USSR; the four beard rockling inhabits the Baltic Sea, and Gaidropsarus mediterraneus is found in the Black Sea. Most rocklings are bottom-dwellers in the littoral zone; some are deep-sea fishes.
