Rocky Mountain National ParkNational park, north-central Colorado, U.S. Established in 1915 and enclosing part of the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains, the park has an area of 262,191 acres (106,105 hectares). It contains many peaks exceeding 10,000 ft (3,000 m), including Longs Peak (14,255 ft [4,345 m]), as well as broad valleys and alpine lakes. The tundra in the park's high country is an island of Arctic vegetation surrounded by plants of lower latitudes. Animal life includes bighorn sheep, deer, mountain lions, and a variety of birds. Established: Established on January 26, 1915. Wilderness designated on December 22, 1980. Designated a Biosphere Reserve in 1976. Location: In north-central Colorado, two hours by car from Denver. Accessible via US 34, US 36, and CO 7 from the east, and US 34 from the west. Facilities: Campgrounds (é), picnic area, rest rooms (é), restaurant/snacks, visitor centers (é), museum/exhibit, self-guided tour/trail (é). Entrance fee required. Activities: Camping, hiking, horseback riding, mountain climbing, fishing, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, auto touring, wildlife viewing, ranger-led programs. Special Features: The park's rich scenery, typifying the massive grandeur of the Rocky Mountains, is accessible by Trail Ridge Road, the highest road in any US National Park (12,183'), which crosses the Continental Divide. Peaks towering more than 14,000 feet shadow wildlife and wildflowers in these 415 square miles of the Rockies.
