Roding

Also found in: Dictionary/thesaurus, Wikipedia 0.01 sec.
Roding

the spring courtship flight of the male woodcock seeking a female. Roding begins after the arrival of the woodcocks and lasts 25 to 30 days. Cold and windy weather delays the beginning of roding. In the evening, soon after sunset, and at the height of the season a little before sunset, the woodcocks fly over the forest, emitting characteristic sounds. The shooting of woodcocks during roding is popular among amateur hunters. Only males are permitted to be shot.
