On the central northern border of ND, northeast of Minot; organized Jan 4, 1873 (prior to statehood) from Buffalo County, which was discontinued. Name Origin: For Joseph Rolette (1820-71), pioneer and fur trader who opened a post for the American Fur Co.

Pop 2005: 13,864. State rank: 10. Pop change: 2000-20005 1.40%; 1990-2000 7.10%. Pop 2000: 13,674 (White 25.00%; Black or African American 0.10%; Hispanic or Latino 0.80%; Asian 0.10%; Other 74.70%). Foreign born: 1.30%. Median age: 28.90.
