Roll Pass Designing
(pass designing, sizing), a set ofmethods for determining the dimensions, shape, number, andtype of arrangement of rolling mill passes. Roll pass designingalso includes the calculation of pressing forces and their distribu-tion on the roll passes. Only section iron is rolled between theshaped rolls. Sheets and wide strips are pressed between rollerswith a smooth cylindrical or barrel-shaped surface. Severalpasses are made for each section; a square or round billet ac-quires a specified form on each successive passage. The rollpasses are designed to avoid excessive stresses in the metal beingrolled, since such stresses could lead to the formation of cracksand other flaws. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
