Thus, seventeenth century Roman Catholic missionaries in the kingdom of Kongo sent back to Europe examples of "idols" worshiped by the heathen (perhaps, from the description, figure sculptures of some kind--for example, the collection of "idols and other various instruments for superstitious practices" brought from Angola in 1692 by the Capuchin missionary Andrea de Pavia, noted in Bassani 2000:160-1).
